Fans of good basketball offense will be entertained when the USC Aiken men play North Georgia today at 7:30 p.m. in Dahlonega, Ga.
The Pacers (9-5, 5-2 Peach Belt Conference) and the Saints (10-4, 5-2) are both in the top five in the PBC in points scored, field-goal percentage, free-throw percentage and 3-point percentage.
USCA, buoyed by Re’Mon Nelson’s 45.5 percent effort from beyond the arc and Ron Zimmerman’s 41.5 percent ratio, are the league’s top 3-point shooting team at 40.5 percent.
The Saints are third in that category and have two of the league’s top 10 perimeter shooters in Ishmael Hollis and Lamar Richardson.
Hollis is second in the league with a 47.7 percent clip from deep, and he’s seventh in the league in scoring with 17.4 points per game while leading the Saints with 7.4 rebounds per game. Richardson is hitting 42.3 percent of his shots from beyond the arc and scores 13.6 points a contest.
In between the pair of juniors is Scott Windom, a senior forward who contributes 14 points and 5.9 rebounds per game and connects on 84.2 percent of his free throws, third in the PBC.
In addition to guards Zimmerman (15.8 points per game) and Nelson (13.9), the Pacers boast two other double-digit scorers in their frontcourt.
Santoine Butler is adding 13.9 points per game on 61.7 percent shooting for the year, fourth in the PBC, but he’s also the league’s best shot blocker at 3.1 per contest.
Paul Larsen has also been efficient, scoring 11.9 per contest on 57.3 percent shooting, and he’s the team leader in rebounds with 8.3 per game, good for fifth in the league.
There could be plenty of offensive opportunities both ways, though, as the two teams are 10th or worst in points, field-goal percentage and 3-point percentage allowed in the league. They are the two worst in the PBC at defending the 3-point shot, so those lofty percentages could be on the way up.
Nelson had a game-high 22 points in last year’s 77-71 home win for the Pacers. USCA head coach Vince Alexander holds an 8-4 record all-time against the Saints.
Jeremy Timmerman has a journalism degree from Mercer University and has been at the Aiken Standard since June 2010.
