Donations, stores help aid Salvation Army’s work

The Salvation Army of Aiken is encouraging residents to stop by one of its three family stores, as well as clean out their closets for some possible donations.

At each of the three Salvation Army-operated stores, there are deals on clothing, household items and furniture. Old items can be donated to these stores. While this is a place to donate and get a tax write-off or find a bargain, it is so much more.

Every time a donation or purchase is made at The Salvation Army Family Store, the proceeds are used to run local programs like the homeless shelter, Boys & Girls Club and social services office.

Last year, more than 20,000 meals to hungry people were served and more than 450 homeless people were homed.

The Salvation Army operates the only homeless shelter in Aiken County for men, women and children. While it receives funding, it is not enough to cover the operating costs, so every donation to or purchase from the Salvation Army keeps somebody from having their lights turned off, puts food on the table of a hungry family, provides a safe place for at-risk children to go after school and provides somewhere to sleep for someone with nowhere to turn.

To arrange a pick up for your furniture donations, call 641-4141. All donations are tax-exempt.
