Aiken Rugby opens season with wins
Aiken Lions Rugby, a Division 2 high school club team, played Rugby SC Division 1 opponents, Lexington and Spring Valley. In matches, where the referees forced the scrums to be unopposed because of inexperienced players from the other teams taking away what was expected to be Aiken’s only advantage, the Lions’ forward dominated in the loose play. Led by co-captons Parker Schwenker and Coby Webb, Aiken was in control in the rucks.
The forwards hard running and rucking opened up movements for the backs. Jorden Krueger-Wernet forced the ball wide letting the other backs and wings run free.
Aiken had a record day, setting team marks for number tries (Touch Downs). Tries coming from Schwenker (3), Ryan Muir (3), Malik Ryan(2), Marcus Cox (2) and Tanner Barrett(1). Aiken will take its physical play to Greenville next Saturday to play teams from North Carolina and Georgia, prior to starting Rugby SC Union play on Feb. 1.
It was a tough couple of days for the South Aiken Christian Baptist basketball teams. All four teams – varsity and junior varsity boys and girls – were swept in consecutive days by Dorchester and Palmetto Christian. On Thursday against Dorchester; the JV girls lost 45-20, the JV boys lost 47-30, the varsity girls lost 68-41 and the varsity boys fell 55-35. On Friday, the JV girls lost 29-18, the JV boys lost 52-19, the varsity girls lost 66-19 and the varsity boys fell 66-20. All four will return to action on Tuesday at Calhoun.
