The Aiken Republican Club is kicking off the new year with its first meeting of 2013 with U.S. Congressman Trey Gowdy as a guest speaker.

The topics Gowdy will discuss include House oversight and government reform committee, an overview of the hearings on the Benghazi attacks in which U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed along with other U.S. officials, an update on the Fast and Furious gunwalking scandal and a general update on what's going on in Washington, D.C., according to a press release.
“We're excited about having him,” said Tony Coffaro, vice president of the Republican Club. “I look at this as very timely information, and I think it's good for our members and non-members who attend.”
Gowdy represents South Carolina's fourth district. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1982 and earned his degree in history at Baylor University in 1986. Later, he attended the University of South Carolina School of Law where he was a member of the scholastic honor society “Order of the Wig and Robe,” according to the release.
Gowdy acted as 7th Circuit Solicitor, and during his tenure, he started a Violence Against Women Task Force and a Worthless Check Program, according to his website. Gowdy expanded Drug Court, and established a Drug Mother Protocol in an effort to assist expectant mothers in breaking the cycle of addiction, his website reads.
Gowdy serves on a variety of House committees including Education and the Workforce, Ethics, Judiciary and Oversight, and Government Reform. He is also the chairman of the Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security for the Judiciary Committee.
The meeting will be held on Jan. 31 at Newberry Hall located at 117 Newberry St. Registration and social hour begins at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon.
The cost for club members is $15 and $20 for non-members.
