The families of two fallen Aiken Public Safety officers have established with USC Aiken the Sandy Rogers and Scotty Richardson Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Both were killed in the line of duty – Richardson in December 2011 and Rogers the following month.
“It’s important for us to do this,” said Rogers’ sister, Jenny Johnson. “We’ve known the Richardson’s forever and we’re still like family.”
The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student majoring in sociology at USCA. Preference will be given to students with financial need and with career interests in criminal justice. Members of both families met with USCA officials before the holidays to plan for the scholarship.
“It’s really exciting,” said Patsy Richardson, Richardson’s mother and added for the family, including Richardson’s widow, Amelyn Richardson. “It means a lot to do something like this.”
Rogers and Richardson loved USCA and both attended the university, Johnson said. Rogers’ life partner, Frances Willams, has worked for USCA’s police department for many years.
Patsy Richardson said her son also attended South Aiken High School. In his memory, the school established a scholarship.
The families made the initial gift to create the scholarship, said Dr. Deidre Martin, vice chancellor for university advancement.
“This scholarship will provide a lasting legacy to the memory of these two fine individuals,” Martin said in a news release. “Scotty and Sandy were killed in the line of duty last year, and both had strong ties to USC Aiken and the sociology department. We are pleased that their memory will be honored in this special way.”
