A car crashed through a pane of glass into a Verizon Wireless store in Aiken on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 1 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless on South Aiken Lane, just off Whiskey Road, according to Sgt. Jake Mahoney of the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

The female driver was pulling her four-door Chevrolet Malibu into a parking spot when the incident happened.

“Her foot slipped off the brake and hit the accelerator,” Mahoney said. “She jumped over the curb and through the plate glass window, into the lobby.”

The store was occupied by customers and store employees when the incident happened, but Mahoney said there were no injuries.

EMS crews were on the scene tending to the driver, who was later taken to the hospital. Mahoney said she will not face criminal charges for the incident.

“No criminal charges, but she will be found at fault for the collision,” he said.

The car sat in the lobby of the store, flanked by black pieces of metal framing and a sea of broken glass that crunched as officers walked around investigating the scene on Wednesday afternoon.

The store is normally open until 8 p.m. on weekdays; however, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the lights were off and the store was locked. Three pieces of plywood covered the hole.

It was not known at press time when the store closed or if it would be open today.
