Another look at the bridge
The appearance of the new Laurens Street bridge is causing many calls to TalkBack. Living next to the bridge, I get a good view while walking over it. Certainly the concrete sidewalls are very plain but really not ugly. I believe that people are reacting to the unsightly chain like fence that anchors all four sides and the shiny steel crash rails at the corners. The shiny metal fence is two feet higher than the bridge; the previous fence was lower and black.
The bridge itself has a graceful arch but that feature is invisible to anyone driving over the structure. Perhaps the Aiken Standard could print a photo as seen from the northeast side.
Time will dull the shine of the steel crash rails but perhaps the fences should be replaced in the near future.
