Three men have been detained after leading police on a short chase following a home invasion in Wagener on Monday.

Steven William Rutland, 23, of Lewie Street in Wagener, and Raphale Lamarr Pontoo, 19, of Lawana Drive in Gloverville, both have been charged with second-degree burglary. Glen Smith, 32, of Taylor Acres Lane in Wagener, currently is hospitalized and will likely face charges when he is released.

Rutland and Pontoo remained in the Aiken County detention center Tuesday.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. Monday at a home on Big Branch Road in Wagener, according to a report by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim told officers he was in bed with his girlfriend in the back bedroom of the home when he heard a loud bang, according to the report. When he went out to investigate, he saw three men inside his home.

The victim reportedly knew Smith and asked him why they were in his home. He began to yell expletives toward the intruders as they fled from the home when the victim told them he was going to get a gun.

Smith allegedly punched the victim in the face when the victim confronted him, according to the report. The victim followed the suspects in their vehicle until police arrived.

Smith was taken to a hospital in Columbia for “possible head injuries” after jumping from the moving truck before the driver stopped for law enforcement, according to the report.

No items were taken from the home.
