Aiken County residents without a high school diploma or basic reading skills have extensive opportunities through the Aiken County School District to move forward with their lives.
“We have open enrollment and people can come by and enroll daily,” said Dr. Rosa Ishmal, the district’s director of adult education.
Through that program, people can complete requirements for a high school diploma, GED and WorkKeys certification. WorkKeys is a job skills assessment system that can help both employers and prospective employees.
The school district also provides literacy/adult basic reading classes.
English as a Second Language students can be accommodated, as well.
Prospective adult education students can register through May 13.
Previously, Ishmal served as the district’s federal Title I coordinator. She has directed the adult education program for the past three years.
“I’m excited about and really like to do something for adults who have challenges,” Ishmal said. “The program can make a difference in the economic picture of South Carolina, as there are 400,000 adults in the state who don’t have high school credentials. We welcome all adults to be a part of our program.”
