Free tax preparation is available to low- and middle-income taxpayers, and older adults beginning on Jan. 28.
Volunteer counselors trained by the IRS will be on hand to prepare and electronically file tax returns at the Aiken County Public Library Monday through Friday from Jan. 28 to April 23. They will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The counselors will also be available on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning on Jan. 28 at the same time at the Nancy Carson Library in North Augusta.
Appointments are encouraged, and walk-ins are welcome.
This program, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, is offered in cooperation with the IRS.
It “helps low- to moderate-income taxpayers have more discretionary income for everyday essentials, such as food and housing, by assisting with tax services and ensuring they receive applicable tax credits and deductions,” according to its website.
District Coordinator Leonora Meyers said the program completed 1,100 tax returns last year.
“We assist a lot of retired people that don’t have to belong to AARP,” she said.
The counselors will file each tax return electronically on the same day they are prepared.
“Be sure and bring last year’s (federal and state) tax return,” Meyers said.
Participants should also provide their current W-2s, 1099s, and other relevant material.
Electronic filing requires that taxpayers bring their Social Security card, picture ID, and Social Security cards for all dependents if the AARP Tax-Aide program did not prepare their returns last year.
