Authorities have captured a German shepherd they said attacked a 12-year-old North Augusta girl while she was walking her dog on Tuesday.

The incident happened about 6 a.m. near the intersection of Wildwood Drive and Landon Lane in North Augusta, according to a report by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl was walking her dog near her home when the German shepherd attacked her near the woodline on the roadway, according to the report. The victim told officers the dog bit her hands as she tried to defend herself, and officers could see lacerations to the girl’s palms and fingers.

The victim ran back to her home, falling in the road along the way and suffering scrapes to her knees and elbows, according to the report.

A spokesman for Aiken County Animal Services said on Wednesday that the dog was captured later on Tuesday morning.

The victim’s mother said she had seen the dog in the area several times before, and that she’s also seen it “charge” other residents in the area, according to the report.

While trying to locate the dog’s owner, officers were directed to homes on Sycamore Street and Elder Lane, according to the report. A neighbor on Sycamore Street told officers the dog’s owner lived on the street, and that the suspect has been “trying to call the dog” in their yard. The neighbor reportedly saw the dog running from the suspect’s home on multiple occasions in the past.

About a half-dozen other neighbors near the scene of the incident reported seeing the dog running loose in the neighborhood before.

The suspect told officers that he didn’t own a German shepherd and had not seen one in his yard at all, according to the report.

Capt. Troy Elwell said if you see any stray dog, stay away.

“Don’t approach a stray dog,” he said. “You don’t know the mentality of the animal.”

Elwell said if you see a stray animal, call Aiken County Animal Services at 642-1537. Call 911 if an animal is attacking a person.
