If USC Aiken’s third-ranked women’s basketball team is to face a stern test, it doesn’t appear to be coming today against Columbus State. The Pacers will enter the game, set for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff at CSU’s Lumpkin Center, with an advantage at both ends of the floor.

The Cougars (5-5, 1-2 Peach Belt Conference) come into the game allowing opponents to shoot a better percentage from the field than they do, giving up a 40.1 percent mark as compared to their own 38.3 percent effort.

That should suit the Pacers (10-0, 3-0) just fine, as Mike Brandt’s team is shooting a 48.3 percent clip on the year while allowing opponents 37.1 percent and only 53.3 points while scoring 73.5 a game.

Sophomore guard Taren White is the Cougars’ leading scorer at a little more than 12 points per game, but junior guard Asha Alexander is the statistical workhorse on the team. Alexander is averaging 9.8 points on for the year, second only to White on the team, and is leading the team in rebounds with 8.4 and assists with 2.2.

As his been the case for a while, junior forward Kayla Harris leads the Pacers in both points and rebound with 19.3 and 7.6, and she also adds better than three assists per game to get her teammates involved.

One of the players who has best capitalized on that is senior guard Daniela Tarailo. Fresh off a 26-point performance at Georgia Southwestern on Thursday, Tarailo is averaging 15.3 points per game on a 44.6 percent shooting from beyond the 3-point line, and she hauls in 3.8 rebounds per game.

The Pacers got the better of Columbus State when they hosted the Cougars, picking up a 68-47 win. That victory was a surprisingly rare one in the series for Brandt, though. In his time as USCA’s leader, Brandt has a 6-10 record against Columbus State, and that .375 winning percentage is his worst mark against any team he’s faced 10 times or more.
