COLUMBIA ó The director of Richland County elections said she will soon step down following a troubled Election Day that included hours-long lines, broken voting machines and missing ballots.

Lillian McBride said in a letter submitted to elections officials Thursday that she would leave her post Jan. 12.

McBride has been the focus of criticism surrounding the problematic November elections. A report determined the county sent out hundreds fewer voting machines than legally required. Some people waited in line for five hours or more to vote. Final ballots in Richland County werenít cast until after midnight Election Day.

The chairwoman of the county elections board also resigned and called on McBride to step down, too. Liz Crum said last month she had lost confidence in McBride.
