Cooper Harrison Ryan, the son of Steve and Faith Ryan, was the first baby born at Aiken Regional Medical Centers in 2013.
Cooper was born at 2:16 a.m. on Tuesday at 5 pounds, 12 ounces. He is also reportedly the first baby born in the CSRA in the new year.
Faith, due to give birth later this month, visited her doctor Monday. The doctor noted the expectant mother’s blood pressure was too high.
“I wasn’t having any contractions. Nothing else was wrong,” Faith said.
She then had some lab work done, which wasn’t “favorable,” and was admitted to the hospital. Nurses broke her water to induce labor.
The Ryans definitely did not plan on having a New Year’s baby. Cooper, the family’s first child, wasn’t due for another two weeks.
“He’s just got to show off, doesn’t he?” Steve said, who admitted he wasn’t quite sure what he’d packed in Faith’s hospital bag since he put it together frantically.
“That was on my to-do list yesterday – pack my hospital bag and install the car seat,” Faith said.
Faith said labor and delivery nurses were concerned Cooper’s head was getting too “squished” during the labor and thought a C-section might be necessary. Faith’s OBGYN Dr. Oletha Minto was called to the hospital. When she arrived, Faith was fully dilated and Cooper was crowning.
“I pushed a few times – four or five times – and he was born,” Faith said.
Steve, a native of Boston, and Faith, from Leesville, were married in August 2011. They’d been together since 2004.
Faith said holding Cooper for the first time was “amazing.”
“You don’t have words to describe how you feel,” she said.
The Ryans thanked the staff at ARMC and at Aiken Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates.
The family received a large gift basket with baby care supplies and toys compliments of ARMC and Cannon House Florist & Gifts.
