GOP must compromise

In response to Pat Kirk’s recent letter, the first objective of proponents of any political ideology is to get elected. If policy A is something you fervently believe in, but is unpopular with the electorate you fail to attain that crucial first step, and will have diminishing impact. However if you are willing to work with the other side and make a small step towards policy A, you are not abandoning your principles – you are being pragmatic. If policy A is good for the country, it will become more evident after a small step in that direction. An all-or-nothing approach causes huge partisan divides and polarization that cannot be breached and policy A will never be achieved. Sticking to their political principles and not compromising is the death knell for the GOP.
