As the winter chill bites, a local Walmart is trying to help disadvantaged residents stay warm.

On Saturday, the Walmart store at 2035 Whiskey Road will be holding a Free Coat Drive.

According to Department Manager Bessie Huggins, the store is giving winter clothing items to “less fortunate individuals who need a coat.”

Huggins said her store would give out “as many coats as possible” to individuals in need. Donations are also welcome from those who have coats they wish to pass along.

Walmart holds similar drives throughout the country each winter.

“As we gather with friends and family to celebrate the holidays this year, it's important for us to remember our neighbors in need,” said Sylvia Mathews Burwell, president of the Walmart Foundation.

Walmart and its philanthropic arm, the Walmart Foundation, are support initiatives such as this Free Coat Drive aimed at “helping people live better around the globe,” according to the company.

In May 2010, Walmart and its Foundation made a historic pledge of $2 billion through 2015 to fight hunger in the United States.
