Mom gets no prison for leaving baby
GREENVILLE (AP) — A mother who abandoned her newborn in the toilet of a South Carolina sports arena has avoided prison time.
Jessica Blackham was sentenced to a year of house arrest and three years of probation Wednesday after pleading guilty.
Prosecutors said the 26-year-old Blackham went into labor while watching the circus in February 2011 and gave birth to a 6-pound boy in a cramped stall. She left the child in the toilet and went home with her family.
Authorities said the baby was found by a cleaning crew 90 minutes later, his neck just above the water and with a body temperature of 85 degrees. The newborn survived and is developing normally.
Blackham apologized, telling the judge she may have not been thinking clearly because of blood loss.
Couple charged in infant’s death
LEXINGTON (AP) — A Lexington County couple is facing charges in the death of their 2-month-old daughter.
Sheriff James Metts said 33-year-old Jordan Ray Hodson was arrested Tuesday and charged with homicide by child abuse. His wife, 32-year-old Sara Elizabeth Hodson, has been charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.
Deputies said the Hodsons took their daughter, Makenna, to a doctor’s office on Tuesday because she was unresponsive. The girl was subsequently taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the girl showed signs of trauma.
The Hodsons were in jail Wednesday, and it wasn’t known if they had attorneys.
