Goose Creek’s Tramel Terry named Mr. Football

MYRTLE BEACH — Tramel Terry was named Mr. Football on Friday night during the North-South Banquet at Myrtle Beach High School.

Terry, Goose Creek’s talented running back/wide receiver, became only the second Lowcountry player to win the award since its inception in 1995. The only other local player to win the coveted award was Moe Thompson of Stratford. The defensive end was named Mr. Football in 2001.

Terry, a 6-1, 190-pound senior, tallied 1,861 all-purpose yards this fall and scored 24 touchdowns.

Terry rushed for 841 yards, averaging 7.4 yards per carrym, and had 818 receiving yards, averaging 16.7 yards per catch. Terry also averaged 18.4 yards per kickoff return.

Strom Thurmond senior running back Darius Hammond was also one of the finalists, which included Byrnes receiver Akia Booker, T.L. Hanna linebacker Ben Boulware, and Conway quarterback Mykal Moody.

The award capped a big day for Terry. Earlier in the day, he signed his financial aid scholarship papers to attend the University of Georgia. He will sign his national letter of intent on Feb. 6.

The award gave Mr. Football a reason to smile. He and his teammates were sidelined from the playoffs when the High School League ruled the Gators used an ineligible player.

“We didn’t get to the state or a chance to defend at state,” Terry said. “This is for my teammates. We won tonight.”
