Filing opens at noon today for the vacant District 6 seat on Aiken County Council.

The seat was held by Charles Barton before he resigned from Council with approximately two years left to his term.

Barton was elected Aiken County auditor on Nov. 6 and was appointed recently to fill the unexpired term of retired auditor Cyrus Spradley.

An eligible candidate must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter in Aiken County, and must live in District 6 at the time of the election, according to the state Election Commission.

Three people have identified themselves to the Aiken Standard as candidates for the seat: John McMichael, Lynette Barton and Phil Napier. McMichael is a business development officer with Hutson Etherredge Companies; Barton is the operator of Barton Radiator and Electrical Service; and Napier owns Napier Hardware in Graniteville. All three are running as Republican candidates.

Paper copies of Statements of Economic Interests – the incorrect filing of which knocked hundreds of candidates off the June primary ballot – are due at the exact same time as Statements of Intention of Candidacy.

All SEIs must be filed electronically; a candidate must file it electronically, print a copy and file that paper copy with the appropriate election official at the same time they file their candidacy paperwork, according to the state Ethics Commission.

Filing for the District 6 seat closes at noon on Dec. 17.

The primaries will be held on Feb. 5. The special election will be held on March 29.

Democratic candidates are asked to file at 225 Chesterfield St. N. For more information, call 644-5335.

Republican candidates will file at 127 Greenville St. S.W. For more information, call 648-5626.
