Thoroughbred Futures Racing’s Nakano returns Saturday in the 6-furlong Grade 3 Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The 4-year-old stakes winning filly was broken and trained by Tim and Cary Frommer.
The bay daughter of Grade 1 winner First Samurai finished 3rd in her last start, the 6 ½-furlong Mike Sherman Memorial Stakes at Calder Race Course on Oct. 6. The Marty Wolfson charge drew the rail, and will have jockey Javier Castellano in the irons.
Nakano has run in the money in her last 6 starts, with the last 5 contests being stakes races, including a 3rd place effort this summer in the Grade 1 Princess Rooney Handicap. Nakano joined the ranks of stakes winners when she captured the 5-furlong Connie Ann Stakes at Calder Race Course on Sept. 3.
The filly last worked at Calder on Dec. 4, breezing a half-mile in 49 4/5 seconds. Nakano has 3 wins, 4 seconds and 3 thirds from 13 lifetime starts, and has earned $153,652.
