Authorities are investigating a shooting in Jackson that left one person injured and put a school on lockdown this afternoon.
The shooting happened on the 400 block of Fifth Street in Jackson, according to Capt. Troy Elwell of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. The victim was shot once in the upper right chest and was awake and talking when transported to the hospital, Elwell said.
The shooting put Jackson Middle School, which is located on Atomic Road, on lockdown, said Bill Burkhalter, Aiken School Board attorney. The shooting happened toward the end of the school day when students were preparing to leave, he said.
Burkhalter said the lockdown was a precautionary procedure, and that by 4:30 p.m., most students had left the school.
Officers from the Sheriff's Office and Jackson Police Department are still searching for the shooter. More information on this incident will be provided as it becomes available.
