Better Lucky made it Grade 1 wins on each coast this weekend for Godolphin Racing as the filly rallied to win the $250,000 Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes by 1-length Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park. The daughter of the 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper joined Dance Card who won the Grade 1 Gazelle Stakes Saturday at Aqueduct. Better Lucky was broken in Aiken by Tim Jones.
The bay filly was sent off as the second longest shot in the wagering at odds of 35-1 in the field of 8 entries in the 1-mile turf race, and paid $72.20 to win. It was the third victory of Better Lucky’s sophomore season, and second stakes score. The Tom Albertrani charge won the Grade 2 Sands Point at Belmont Park on May 28. Better Lucky was reunited with jockey Eddie Castro, her regular rider, for the Matriarch.
Better Lucky is out of the Grade 2 winning mare Sahara Gold, and is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Sahara Heat. She finished 3rd in her previous start the 1 1/8-mile Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes at Keeneland 6 weeks ago.
Better Lucky now has 4 wins, 1 second and 2 thirds, increasing his lietime earnings to $438,950.
