The two hotels proposed for Whiskey Road are back on the agenda with big changes made to the plan with hope that Aiken City Council will give it a thumbs up.

Naman Hotels first proposed a Staybridge Suites and Holiday Inn Express to be constructed on a plot of land on Whiskey Road at Stratford Drive earlier this fall. Council didn't pass the second reading on Oct. 8 mostly due to concerns with an outlet onto Stratford Drive shown in the concept plan. The plan has been amended, and it's up for Council's review again Monday at its regularly scheduled meeting.

Though many seemed OK with the idea of the hotels themselves, Council members and residents living in the vicinity of the project were mostly uneasy about the layout. The plan showed two outlets – one onto Whiskey Road and the other on Stratford Drive.

Residents were worried about the traffic especially since Stratford Drive is the only outlet for three neighborhoods which have more than 200 homes combined.

The access from Stratford Drive has been deleted from the concept plan and a frontage road parallel to Whiskey Road has been added.

The Planning Commission recommended the approval of the project at its Nov. 13 meeting.

According to a memorandum from City Manager Richard Pearce, this project has a total economic impact of $30,000,000.

Naman Hotels has also asked for the 5.96 acres on which the hotels are planned to be constructed to be annexed into the City.

Council will also review an application for another Lulu's Car Wash to be constructed on an outlet at the Shoppes at Richland located on the western end of Richland Avenue.

The application includes a request to revise the Shoppes At Richland concept plan, which has its outlets zoned Planned Commercial. A car wash is considered Vehicle Sales and Service in the zoning ordinance, according to a memorandum from the Planning Commission.

A Lulu's Car Wash recently opened in 2011 on E. Pine Log Road.

Both the hotel and the car wash proposals will be up for first readings Monday.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Monday and will be held in Council Chambers located upstairs in the Municipal Building at 214 Park Ave. S.W.
