CLEMSON — Dabo Swinney looked up and didn’t like what he saw Sunday. When the Clemson coach examined the BCS Standings, he saw three two-loss teams ranked above one-loss ACC teams Clemson and Florida State.
No. 7 LSU (9-2), No. 8 Stanford (9-2) and No. 9 Texas A&M (9-2) are all ranked ahead of No. 11 Clemson (10-1) and No. 10 Florida State (10-1).
“It’s ridiculous,” Swinney said. “We’re as good as anybody out there. … I don’t think teams with two losses should be ahead of a Clemson or a Florida State. But some of that’s perception. Some of that’s a result of teams you play who aren’t having good years. You don’t control that.”
Swinney, who has a vote in the coaches poll, voted Clemson “fifth or sixth” in the poll. Swinney voted Notre Dame No. 1 because the Irish are without a loss, but he doubts that the Irish are the best team.
“I’d love to play Notre Dame,” Swinney said.
Chad Morris’ new agent? Steve Spurrier
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier sounded Tuesday as if he wouldn’t mind Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris finding a new place of employment this offseason.
“I would think his name has got to be on a list of head coaching candidates,” Spurrier said. “… lot of teams have scored 34 on (Clemson) and that hasn’t been good enough.”
Swinney had this to say on the war of words with Spurrier that has been on-going over the last year.
“Coach Spurrier is an interesting guy,” Swinney said. “He likes to stir it up every now and then. (Spurrier) has a long track record. … We get along, I don’t think it’s personal.”
Tajh Boyd isn’t a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award – given to the nation’s top quarterback – despite having more yards, more yards per attempt, more touchdowns and a better efficiency rating than finalists Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M), Braxton Miller (Ohio State) and Collin Klein (Kansas State).”
“I don’t know what’s wrong with all y’all,” Swinney said of the media. “I know I’m biased but I can’t imagine there’s a quarterback better in the country. … I wouldn’t trade him for any quarterback.”
Clemson might have found the pass rusher it’s been missing since the departure of former star Da’Quan Bowers. Defensive end Vic Beasley is averaging one sack every 31 snaps this season.
He leads the team with eight despite playing a part-time role. For comparison, Bowers averaged a sack once every 41 snaps during his prolific junior season.
For further comparison, fellow defensive end Malliciah Goodman is averaging one sack every 240 snaps for his career.
Dabo said it
Swinney celebrated a birthday Tuesday and was asked if he’s a better coach than he was four years ago.
“I’m 43 today. I was 38 when I got thrown into this grease pit,” Swinney said. “I’m more mature.”
