COASTAL CAROLINA 41, CSU 20
CONWAY — Sophomore Quinn Backus had 14 tackles to set a Coastal Carolina single-season record as the Chanticleers overwhelmed Charleston Southern 41-20 Saturday to win a share of their fifth Big South Conference title in 10 years fielding a football program.
Charleston Southern shares the league title with Stony Brook and Liberty, but advances to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs based on the tiebreaker.
Backus, who now has 121 tackles, also forced a fumble and ended the Buccaneers’ first drive of the game with an interception. That sparked Coastal Carolina to three straight rushing touchdowns by Lorenzo Taliaferro (2 yards), Aramis Hillary (4 yards) and Jeremy Height (2 yards). Hillary, a Strom Thurmond grad, finished with 115 yards on 14 carries.
THE CITADEL 42, FURMAN 20
GREENVILLE — VanDyke Jones ran for three touchdowns, and The Citadel rushed for more than 300 yards to beat Furman 42-20.
The Citadel had more rushing yards than the Paladins’ total offensive yardage. The Bulldogs rushed for 309 yards on 47 carries, while Furman had 298 total yards.
The Citadel trailed 17-14 late in the second quarter but pulled ahead on Jones’ 14-yard touchdown run with 1:12 left in the half. The Bulldogs never trailed again and was able to pull away from Furman (3-8, 2-6).
GARDNER WEBB 21, PRESBYTERIAN 15
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Kenny Little ran for a career-high 172 yards and two touchdowns to lead Gardner-Webb to a 21-15 win over Presbyterian.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs never trailed against Presbyterian in the season finale for both teams.
S.C. STATE 27, SAVANNAH ST. 13
ORANGEBURG — Richard Cue passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as South Carolina State defeated Savannah State 27-13 in the season finale for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rivals.
Cue found Caleb Davis with a 3-yard touchdown pass to make it 20-7 in the third quarter after giving the Bulldogs (5-6, 4-4) a first-and-goal at the 1 with a 28-yard toss to Temar Hemingway.
The Tigers (1-10, 0-8) made it 20-13 with 1:39 left in the third on Victorian Hardison’s 10-yard pass to Dylan Cook after John Wilson’s interception and 23-yard return to the Savannah State 42.
South Carolina State increased its lead to 14 points with 5:07 remaining on a 20-yard touchdown run by Cue. The Bulldogs had a field goal try from the 24 blocked, but Cephas Wilson recovered the ball and advanced it far enough for a first down at the 20.
