Salvation Army to hold second Kettle Cook-Off

Thirteen local businesses and community leaders are teaming up with the Salvation Army on Saturday to stir up some good food for a good cause.

The second Kettle Cook-Off will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Newberry Street in downtown Aiken. Admission is $5 per person, which allows them to sample the 13 “tasty creations in a Crock-Pot,” according to Salvation Army Capt. Angela Repass. Families of four to five people will be $20, families of six to seven will be $25, and families of eight to 10 will be $30.

A red Salvation Army kettle will be placed on each table while attendees sample the slow cooker creations.

“You vote on which one is your favorite by dropping some money in the kettle on their table,” Repass said.

The team whose kettle has the most money will win a variety of prizes, including Steeplechase tickets, gift cards and gift certificates.

In addition to the tasty samples, there will be other foods for purchase including hot wings, hot dogs, popcorn and drinks, as well as a bake sale.

For the kids, there will be bounce houses, face painting, temporary tattoos, craft stations, a basketball shoot and corn hole. There will also be live music throughout the day, with performances by the Salvation Army band from Augusta, a clogging group and a praise band.

All proceeds benefit the Salvation Army and its outreach programs, which include the homeless shelter, its social services department, its Christmas program, which provides toys, clothing and food for needy families, and the Boys & Girls Club.

“I gave a challenge to my employees last year, because what we've been doing is fine but I wanted something exciting,” Repass said. “One of my employees submitted this idea and that's what I chose.”

Last year's event raised more than $1,500, which Repass said was more than she expected. This year, their goal is $2,500.

“I think we can pull it off,” she said.

Aiken Public Safety will have the northbound lanes of Newberry Street closed during the event, but the southbound lanes will remain open.
