Aiken County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department is holding a public input meeting tonight and tomorrow to gather information for the development of a master plan.
Tonight’s meeting is at Jackson Town Hall, 106 Main St. in Jackson, from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday’s meeting will be at the New Ellenton Civic Center, 175 Oak Ridge Ave. in New Ellenton, from 6-8 p.m.
During these meetings, the public is invited to provide input on a plan that will guide the direction, growth, and development of Aiken County Parks, Recreation and Tourism for the next decade. The public input will be factored into the master plan that PRT has teamed up with the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management program at Clemson University to develop.
Clemson and the county are asking for citizen input to ensure the plan addresses the needs and concerns of the citizens of Aiken County. The plan will identify where limited county resources will be expended to help improve the quality of life for all residents.
The master plan will encompass all of Aiken County and will not be isolated to one particular area, so feedback concerning all areas of the county is welcome.
At the first public input session in October, five priorities for the future of Aiken County PRT emerged from the data gathered: outdoor aquatics, linkable multi-modal trails, equestrian-focused programming and facilities, indoor multi-use recreation facilities and enhancing and maintaining existing facilities to include eliminating and/or re-purposing some parks.
Each year, County Council dedicates a portion of the available tax revenue to maintain existing facilities, provide program opportunities and staff these parks and programs. County staff works hard to make sure these resources are used to try and meet the needs of as many County residents as possible.
