Local upper elementary, middle and high school music programs in Aiken County will be the benefactors of a grant awarded to the Aiken Performing Arts Group from Bi-Lo Charities.
The grant funds will be used to supplement APAG’s growing Instruments in Your Attic Program that solicits, refurbishes and distributes musical instruments to schools in the area to enrich the music curriculum and ensure that young people are exposed to the musical arts. Of particular interest, is the pursuit of such instruments as cellos and French horns which are seldom available for donation. Bob Kelley, APAG Educational Outreach chairman, in coordination with the Aiken County Board of Education, said a portion of the funds will also be used to purchase and provide sheet music to school band directors.
The Board of Education maintains a “wish list” for the schools and distributes instruments to music teachers based on their school’s need for instruments to be used by deserving students. It is APAG’s long-term goal to similarly equip every middle and high school in Aiken County.
The grant, in the amount of $8,830, is one in a series of successful grant applications made by APAG. Bi-Lo awarded the grant to APAG in a ceremony on Oct. 4 at The Boys & Girls Club in Augusta.
Since 1984, Bi-Lo Charities has invested more than $50 million into local communities. More than 500 grant requests are received annually totaling more than twice the money available for reinvestment. APAG is proud to be selected as a grantee this year.
Sometimes the most wonderful, peculiar and amazing musical instruments are forgotten over time – stowed away amongst bric-a-brac in the inky shadows of a crowded warehouse, perched high on a pedestal on a dusty display shelf, or locked away in a remote cupboard or dark attic – just waiting to be rediscovered and celebrated anew. This year’s Instruments in Your Attic is going on during the entire month of November. If you own any of these musical treasures and wish to donate them, contact APAG at 643-4774 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
