A Clearwater man has been charged with armed robbery in connection with a shooting incident that happened at a Richland Avenue motel last week, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

Kevin Jamell Walker, 23, was also charged with possession of a firearm during a violent crime, and was placed in the Aiken County detention center, according to police.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. on Oct. 23 near a stairwell in the upstairs breezeway of the Knights Inn on Richland Avenue, police said. Two armed men reportedly came to the motel to rob a man, who had called them and asked them to meet him there.

A fight between the three men resulted in one of the armed men getting shot, police said. The two armed men then reportedly fled the scene.

Walker was arrested at his home on Tuesday, according to the statement.

“We were able to develop leads and secure enough evidence to charge him with armed robbery,” Cpl. Jeremy Hembree said, adding that the shooting still is under investigation.

“We’re not sure if he was the shooter or if he was involved,” Hembree said in reference to the shooting.

Investigators still are trying to locate the shooting victim.
