If you or your children need to run off a belly full of Halloween candy, Wackenhut officers and the City of North Augusta may have what you need.

Wackenhut Services Inc. will hold its fourth annual River Run on Nov. 3 at 9 a.m. Between the 10K (6.2-mile) race, a 5K (3.1-mile) race and a 1-mile fun run for the kids, there’s sure to be something for the entire family.

Now, Wackenhut officers said they just need runners.

Last year, more than 160 people ran in the three events, according to race director Steve Morrone, who works at Wackenhut.

All races will begin at the same time.

The 10K and 5K races will begin at the activities center. Runners in the 10K course will turn onto the North Augusta Greeneway Park and continue under Georgia Avenue before turning around to “retrace” their steps, Morrone said.

The 5K race will also begin at the activities center, but runners will take a route different from previous years, Morrone said.

“We’re going to cover a good portion of that same road down the Greeneway … but on a shorter note,” Morrone said.

Last year, Wackenhut raised a combined $81,290 from corporate donations and race money, according to Morrone. Wackenhut has partnered with United Way since 1983, and they had historically hosted a golf tournament to raise money.

“Our general manager is a runner, not a golfer, so he wanted to try something different,” Morrone said, adding that the race saw increased corporate donations and lower overhead costs.

“The support is for United Way,” Morrone said. “We’re just a mechanism for supporting United Way but also participating in a big run. There are lots of big runs out there, but in North Augusta this is probably one of the premier runs, I’d say, since we started.”

Online registration can be completed at www.Active.com. Registration forms can be found on the Aiken Running Club website at www.runaiken.com.

The registration fee is $30 for the run and $10 for the kids run.

A tax-deductible check should be made payable to Aiken County United Way, and sent to WSI-SRS, Attn: River Run, P.O. Drawer W, Aiken, SC 29802.
