WAGENER-SALLEY 32, FOX CREEK 0
The first few minutes were rough for Fox Creek High School and didn't get much better, as Wagener-Salley celebrated its homecoming by dumping the Predators 32-0.
The Predators' first drive fizzled quickly and ended with a muffed punt, and the War Eagles got the ball in prime field position, leading to a 20-yard touchdown run by Trey Davis with 6:54 left in the opening quarter. That was all the scoring the home team would need to ensure its first winning season since 1995.
“I thought our defense played well,” said Ken Tucker, the Eagles' head coach, who saw his squad improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in Region 5-A action.
“It seemed like we would bend, but don't break. They were able to convert their third downs ... but once they got close, we tightened down and kept them out of the end zone.”
Russell Schneider, Fox Creek's coach, saw his squad slip to 2-6 and 1-3 in the region.
“We thought we had a good game plan coming in,” he said, “but they're just a physical, stronger, faster team right now than we are this year, and Coach Tucker's done a great job with them. He went through some of the stuff that we went through to get here.”
His squad, he confirmed, saw its drives end in various ways.
“We give up too many big plays,” he said.
Davis, en route to a 172-yard performance, wound up with two touchdowns and Eric Corley, adding 143 yards to the campaign, racked another pair of TDs. Fox Creek, as a whole, wound up with 91 rushing yards, leaving quarterbacks Trey Mock and Deondre Baskett to try to make up the difference mostly by air.
Malcolm Stroman and Bobby Chavis had the big-yardage play of the game, as Stroman opted for an aerial offering and Chavis sealed the deal on a 69-yard scoring pass with 3:02 left in the first quarter.
“I think right now our offensive line's playing pretty well, and I thought our defensive line played well most of tonight, and our secondary, I thought, came up pretty big,” Tucker said. “We were pretty solid against the pass this week.”
Fox Creek had a slight edge in the air – 122 yards to 104 – but the home team dominated the running game, by a tally of 357-91.
Wagener-Salley's next assignment is Friday at Hunter-Kinard-Tyler. Fox Creek next plays host to Blackville-Hilda Friday.
