Byers named PBC Player of the Week

USC Aiken senior volleyball player Shannon Byers has been tabbed as the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.


Byers averaged 3.12 kills and 2.00 digs per set in USC Aiken’s two victories last week.


In USCA’s 3-0 win over Peach Belt Conference foe Montevallo, Byers ended her efforts with nine kills, five digs, a service ace and a block.


In USCA’s 3-2 five-set victory over the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Byers claimed 16 kills and 11 digs. She hit .389 in the win over UAH.


Byers is currently 10th in the conference with 2.79 kills per set.


Atkins tied for first, Pacers in second

AKRON, Ohio — The nationally seventh-ranked USCA men’s golf team is in second place after the first round of play at The Firestone Invitational at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club.


The Pacers closed out the first round with a total team tally of 3-under 285. They are just three shots back of first-place Ball State (282).


USCA was led in the first round by 2012 First-Team All-American Matt Atkins, who closed out the first round of the tournament with a 4-under 68. He is tied with Ball State’s Tyler Merkel for first place individually.


Fellow Pacer All-American JP Solis is not far behind Atkins in a tie for third at 3-under 69.


Four Pacers concluded day one in the top-50 individually with Kyle Godsman presently tied for 21st at 73. Mark Dickson is tied for 43rd at 75.


The final 18 holes of the 2012 Firestone Invitational is slated to get underway at 8:30 a.m.

The Schofield Middle School girl’s volleyball team defeated Aiken Middle in a sweep, 25-23, 25-19, 25-13.


The team was led by Sarah Morales, who had 12 assists, Abbie Clemons who had seven digs, seven aces and four kills, and Audrey Byrne who had eight aces and four kills.


Their overall record is now 7-3 and their next game will come at North Augusta in the first round of the playoffs.
