WILLISTON-ELKO 50, H-K-T 0

WILLISTON — Dwayne Garrick was one proud papa.

The battle for the inside track to the Region 4-A title was over before newly-crowned Williston-Elko High School homecoming queen – Celie Garrick, the coach's daughter – could even model her shiny tiara.

But Garrick, who has been the head coach at Williston-Elko since 2006, was proud of his boys, too.

The Blue Devils, who have not dropped a region contest in four years (a Halloween home loss to Blackville-Hilda in 2008), wasted little time in getting some points on the scoreboard and dominating in the trenches in posting a 50-0 pasting of region upstart Hunter-Kinard-Tyler, which was coming off of a stirring 14-7 victory last week over Blackville-Hilda.

“We played well tonight and really got after them defensively,” said W-E head coach Dwayne Garrick. “We still have some things we have to get better at, but I thought we executed throwing the ball tonight, and defensively we were just a little too quick for them up front.”

After stopping Hunter-Kinard-Tyler on the opening possession of the game, Williston-Elko standout running back Jarius Jenkins – who rushed for 174 yards in the game on 16 carries and now has 1,040 yards on the season – took a handoff off right tackle and rumbled 72 yards for the touchdown and a 6-0 lead after the two-point try failed.

Running back David Owens nearly had 100 yards for the Blue Devils, adding 94 on 10 carries.

“(Jenkins) as a sophomore runs like a senior and a well-seasoned back,” Garrick said. “He's a strong kid, and it's hard to bring him down. We were good up front tonight and (Owens) is able to step in there and take some of the pressure off.”

Then, on the team's very next possession, with Jenkins drawing most of the attention of the Trojans' defensive attention, quarterback Dalton Mundy went to the air and receiver Faheem Richburg for a 37-yard touchdown. Jenkins pushed across the goal line for the 2-point conversion and the Blue Devils had taken control early at 14-0 with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter.

The Blue Devils don't throw the ball all that much, but with an explosive opponent on the other side of the field Garrick said all offensive options were on the table.

“With that explosive single-back stuff (the Trojans) run they can score pretty quick,” said Garrick. “We picked our spots (to throw) and (quarterback Dalton) Mundy did a good job. And we are going to have to get better at those types of sets for later in the season when people are loading up the box against us (and the run).”

The next Williston-Elko drive spanned the two quarters and took nine plays (with a heavy dose of Jarius Jenkins) before David Owens plunged in from 7 yards out for a 22-0 lead with 11:02 to go before halftime after Mundy found Richburg on the conversion pass.

The two teams traded punts before the Blue Devils got back on the scoreboard – this time courtesy of the defense. Hunter-Kinard-Tyler quarterback Donnie Edwards had been harried and harassed the entire first half, and on a third-down play deep in his own territory, he tossed the ball toward his sideline seemingly just to get rid of it. Instead, Aaron Walker stepped in front of the ball and waltzed the remaining eight yards into the end zone for a 28-0 lead with 6:36 to go before halftime.

Later in the quarter, with the Trojans needing some help to develop a drive, they got it on a high snap by Williston-Elko that gave H-K-T the ball on the Blue Devils' 35. But the Trojans got no closer than the 14, and the Blue Devils added two more points by way of a safety to lead 30-0 going away.

Williston-Elko (6-2, 3-0) plays at Ridge Spring-Monetta next Friday.
