Dogwood Stable’s Aikenite turned in a strong performance Friday in his return to the races, the opening day of the Keeneland meet, running 4th in his 2012 debut and in his first post retirement start, finishing 2 3/4-lengths behind the eventual winner Sum of the Parts in the 160th running of the 6-furlong $175,000 Grade 3 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes. Aikenite is conditioned by 5-time Eclipse Award winning Trainer Todd Pletcher, and was ridden by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez. Aikenite was trained in Aiken by Legacy Stable’s Brad Stauffer and Ron Stevens.
The Florida-bred son of Yes It’s True was set to return to the races this winter to start his 5-year-old campaign, when his left front ankle became inflamed while training.
The multiple Grade 2 winner spent the summer rehabbing at Dr. Barry and Shari Eisaman’s Eisaman Equine in Williston, Fla.
Dogwood Stable purchased Aikenite at the 2009 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company February Select Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale from the consignment of Eisaman Equine for $225,000.
Aikenite increased his lifetime earnings to $875,385.
