A 44-year-old Aiken man turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday for allegedly touching a 10-year-old girl inappropriately at the Walmart on Whiskey Road in July.

David Dean Nowak was charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He was placed in the Aiken County detention center under $50,000 bond.

Capt. Maryann Burgess with the Aiken Department of Public Safety said officers had been working the case since it was reported. They got in touch with Nowak and persuaded him to turn himself in, she said.

“It took a while to get everything in a row,” she said. “We had an unknown male, so it took us some time to identify, to interview the witnesses. … It was reported in a timely fashion and we began working the case.”

According to a Public Safety report, the 10-year-old girl told officers she was taking her younger brother to the restroom in the store when an unknown man approached her near the bakery section.

“The victim stated that the male put his hand on her right thigh and moved his hand up to her buttocks,” the report stated. “The victim stated that she continued to the restroom.”

The girl told officers that she met with her sister in the toy section of the store, and that while they were looking at Barbie dolls, they noticed the same man enter the aisle. Both girls told officers that the man “got close and made a gesture like he was going to grab the witness on the buttock.”

The girls said they ran away from the man and found their father, who alerted authorities, according to the report.
