An Aiken woman was detained for DUI after allegedly driving her car on the sidewalk of Laurens Street near downtown Aiken on Tuesday, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Tammy Deas, 51, of Tomahawk Drive, was placed in the Aiken County detention center, but had been released as of Wednesday morning.
Officers were called to the area of Laurens Street and Hampton Avenue about 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday after receiving multiple calls about a Ford Mustang driving on the sidewalk of Laurens Street, according to an incident report. They found the vehicle traveling north on Laurens Street and saw it make a U-turn.
Officers traveling behind the vehicle saw it weaving across the southbound lanes, and initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Laurens Street and Barnwell Avenue, the report stated. An officer asked the driver, Deas, if she’d had anything to drink and she said she had not.
When asked to step out of the vehicle, Deas had difficulty maintaining her balance, police said. She failed multiple field sobriety tests and was taken into custody.
At police headquarters, Deas provided a breath sample that indicated a 0.0 percent blood-alcohol content, the report stated. She was taken to a hospital to provide a urine sample.
