A fundraiser is being held for a local woman who is fighting a rare form of cancer.
This fundraiser is to help Rebecca Meek, 19, who is a Beech Island native fighting carcinoid syndrome. She’s the daughter of Kim and Doug Meek, and the family recently traveled to Tennessee for Meek’s surgery. Meek is continuing treatments to fight the disease.
In November, Meek was diagnosed with carcinoid syndrome, an extremely rare form of cancer that causes tumors that release too much of the hormone serotonin and other chemicals that cause dilation of blood vessels. Rather than chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumors is required to fight the disease.
Anyone interested in the fundraiser can enter for a chance to win a Ruger 10/22, a Yeti cooler, $50 visa or other prizes. The drawing will be held on Sunday at Which Wich in the Shoppes at Brookhaven at 3 p.m. Restaurant owner Troy Williamson has partnered with the family and will donate 15 percent of the sales from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. that day.
Tickets are $10 and sold at Hooties, Todd’s Convenience Store, La Bella Capelli Salon, First Citizens Beech Island, Beech Island Credit Union and Nania Aveda Concept Salon.
