A sick raccoon captured on Sunday in the area of Northwood Drive in Aiken has tested positive for rabies, according to Public Safety spokesman Capt. David Turno. The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control has information on rabies for those who may have come in contact with the animal at www.scdhec.gov/environment/envhealth/rabies/. There were eight confirmed cases of rabies in Aiken County in 2012 — three in foxes, one in a bat and four in raccoons. S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control urges people not to handle stray or wild animals that are behaving aggressively or abnormally. Instead, call Aiken Public Safety’s Animal Control Division at 642-7620 if in city limits or Aiken County Animal Control at 642-1537.
