WILLISTON-ELKO 38, RS-M 25
WILLISTON — Williston-Elko High School dominated the second half on Friday night en route to winning their fifth-straight region game, improving to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in region play with a 38-25 victory over the visiting Trojans of Ridge Spring-Monetta. The Trojans fall to an even 4-4 for the season and are now 1-3 in region action.
The game was ultimately decided with six minutes left in regulation when Williston-Elko, up by just five points, had the ball around their own 12-yard line. Dalton Mundy’s pass on a first-and-10 play was intercepted by Craig Burton and returned eight yards. But a flag was thrown during the play; a costly pass-interference on the Trojans which gave the ball back to the Blue Devils with just one yard to go for a first down.
Antonio Coleman would convert the first down on the very next play, extending the drive for Williston-Elko, which went on to score the game-clinching touchdown after burning nearly four minutes off the game clock.
Despite the miscue on defense for the Trojans, RSM had little trouble keeping up with the Blue Devils for much of the game despite being without normal starting quarterback Reggie Preston. Fellow senior Sam Bedenbaugh took over play calling duties, but faltered down the stretch as he failed to complete six of his final eight passes and was sacked twice in the closing minutes but still managed to finish with 131 passing yards off a 10-22 outing that included two touchdowns and one interception.
The Trojans’ go-to work horse, Travious Wigfall, proved once again to be one of the best and toughest players in the area as he racked up 238 total yards including 127 yards rushing off 19 carries, 88 yards in returns and 23 receiving. The senior running back/linebacker accounted for four touchdowns on the night and was in on several tackles.
On the other side of the field, Williston-Elko was led by Mundy’s 159 passing yards off an 11-16 performance that included one touchdown and passing to complete two two-point conversions. Mundy did well to spread the ball around as he targeted seven different receivers at least once.
Coleman ended the night for the Blue Devils with 71 yards on the ground off 18 carries and added another 23 yards in returns.
