Police look for suspect in robbery attempt
The Aiken Department of Public Safety is investigating a Thursday late-night attempted convenience store robbery.
The incident happened about 10 p.m. at the Green Light Express on Richland Avenue, according to a police report. Officers arrived to find the store clerk upset and crying.
The clerk told officers a white man wearing a black hoodie and a black mask entered the store and demanded money from the cash register and “the lottery money,” the report stated. The clerk yelled, “no,” and began to scream.
A man who was in the store when the suspect entered told him not to harm the clerk, according to the report. The man then fled the scene, and the clerk called 911.
Officers searched the area and brought out the Aiken County bloodhound tracking team to assist. Investigators found a black hoodie and a blue bag near the store.
Aiken police respond to call of shots fired
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office responded early Friday to a call of shots fired in Midland Valley Country Club.
The shots were reported on Midland Drive just after 1:30 a.m., according to a sheriff’s office report. While investigating, officers heard more gunshots nearby, and callers gave them an exact address.
Officers checked the address, and, inside a guest house there, they found an open blue lock box on which the locking mechanism had been forced off, according to the report. The homeowner called a phone in the home and told officers he had family members staying there, and they were all right.
Man accidentally starts fire at gas pump
Fire crews were called to a gas station on Edgefield Highway on Wednesday after a man accidentally started a fire while pumping gasoline and lighting a cigarette, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The incident happened at about 2:15 p.m. at the Kent’s Korner on Edgefield Highway, according to the sheriff’s report.
A witness told officers the 19-year-old man was lighting a cigarette at one of the gas pumps when he dropped the cigarette and caught the vehicle partially on fire as well as the gas pump.
The driver admitted to lighting the fire, the report stated. The witness grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the fire and also hit the emergency shut-off valve. The store did not wish to press charges against the driver.
Woman awakes to find shots into her home
A woman awoke during the night to find that someone had fired multiple gunshots into her home, according to Aiken Public Safety.
The shooting happened about 1 a.m. at Crosland Park Apartments on Aldrich Street, according to the incident report. The 23-year-old woman told officers she was in bed with her two children when she heard two or three gunshots.
The officer saw three bullet holes, one near the window and two more in the wall, the report stated. The woman said she didn’t know who could have done it, and that she hasn’t had any confrontations with anyone.
