A single-car accident early Saturday morning in Aiken County has left one teenager dead and another critically injured.
Justin G. Cantwell, 18, of Ridge Spring, was killed in the crash that occurred at around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton and the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Dustin Day, 17, of Aiken, was injured in the accident, and was listed as in critical condition at Georgia Regents University Medical Center on Saturday.
According to a news release from Carlton, the teens were traveling north in the 2000 block of Piper Road in a 2003 GMC Sierra truck when the vehicle left the road, entered a ditch and struck a utility pole. This caused the vehicle to overturn, ejecting both teens, Carlton said.
Neither of the occupants were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, Carlton said.
Cantwell was pronounced dead at Georgia Regents University Medical Center on Saturday morning at 6:19 a.m. According to an obituary, Justin Cantwell is the son of Lori Brown and Billy Cantwell.
Carlton said that alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the accident. The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and toxicology results are still pending.
