AUGUSTA – The nationally third-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken golf team finished in 15th place as a team at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational.
USC Aiken was the only NCAA Division II team in the 15-team field.
After posting a 307 in round one, the Pacers improved dramatically to claim a team score of 296 in the second round. USC Aiken posted a 296 again in round three to finish with a team score of 899.
Two Pacers finished in the top-40 individually with Matt Atkins leading the way. Atkins ended the tournament tied for 23rd at 220 (76-73-71).
USC Aiken’s Kyle Godsman concluded the tournament tied for 40th at 223 (74-75-74).
NCAA Division I national No. 6 Texas won with a three-round team score of 863 (296-282-285). Host Augusta State finished second at 865 (283-293-289).
Coastal Carolina’s Sebastian Soderberg defeated Central Florida’s Greg Eason on the fifth playoff hole to claim individual medalist honors.
Soderberg (75-68-66) and Eason (70-70-69) finished stroke play with identical 209 scores.
USC Aiken will next compete in the 2013 PBC Golf Championship at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga. on April 20 and April 21.
