A late-night traffic crash has claimed the life of a Langley man.
Danny G. Chalker Jr., 23, was pronounced dead at the scene this morning, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. The one-car crash is believed to have happened around 10 p.m. last night, Carlton said.
Chalker was driving a late model Honda Accord and traveling west on Hwy. 278, when the vehicle left the roadway, struck a telephone pole, went through a chain link fence and then struck a tree, Carlton said.
The crash was heard by people living in nearby residences, and police were called, Carlton said; however, the car was unable to be located until this morning around 7:15 a.m.
The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, Carlton said, and Chalker was not wearing a seatbelt.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol along with the Coroner's Office is investigating the crash. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning in Newberry.
Toxicology is pending. Chalker's death is the sixth traffic fatality in Aiken County this year.
