ATC recognizes Mended Hearts’ generosity
Since 2007, the Mended Hearts of Aiken has contributed more than $35,600 to the nursing cardiac care simulation lab, allowing the college to purchase state-of-the art equipment to most effectively train the area’s future nurses.
“We are very grateful for the continued generosity of the Mended Hearts of Aiken,” said Mary Commons, ATC’s director of resource development. “Due to their annual contributions, we are able to teach our nursing students realistic patient situations and critical skills needed in the workplace.”
This year’s contributions have allowed ATC to purchase a head wall for the Pediatric Sim Jr. mannequin, which provides suction and oxygen to the simulator and makes the mannequin more lifelike. The donations also allowed for the purchase of adult and pediatric stethoscopes, basic life support training equipment such as adult and infant resuscitators, an American Red Cross AED Training Device and an IV infusion pump for use with the high fidelity simulator mannequin.
Members of the chapter toured the college’s nursing and paramedic facilities to see their contributions in action. During the visit, a plaque dedicating the nursing simulation lab in the Mended Hearts’ honor was unveiled.
The Aiken Mended Hearts also visited with current nursing students and saw the quality and value of the training equipment firsthand.
“We appreciate everything that the college does in our community to train our nurses,” said Pat Boardman, Aiken Mended Hearts chapter president. “As possible future patients, we know we are in good, well-trained hands.”
Other Mended Hearts members attending the ceremony included Willie Ray, Margaret Gibbs, Rose Ortaldo, Sue Collinsworth, Darrell Collinsworth, Allen Reynolds, Phil Winsor and Mel Sires.
The local Mended Hearts chapter is comprised of more than 100 members who have either had heart disease or are family members of someone with heart disease. Members visit heart patients and their families at Aiken Regional Medical Centers every day of the year to offer advice and support.
