An Aiken man reported to authorities that someone called his phone and said they found his dog, which was apparently taken from his backyard, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

The 25-year-old victim said an unknown man called his phone on Tuesday and “claimed” he had found the owner’s dog, according to a report by ADPS.

The victim examined his backyard where the dog was supposed to be and found that a portion of the fence had been torn down.

The man on the phone told the victim that he could pick up the dog at Kent’s Korner on York Street, according to the report. He also “demanded a reward.”

The victim agreed to give the man a reward and met him at the gas station, where he found the dog tied up with a black garbage bag, according to the report. The owner gave the man $20 and took his dog home, then contacted police, according to the report.

Officers inspected the fence in the owner’s backyard and found that the damaged portion appeared to have been pushed inward from the outside of the fence, and the wooden screws appeared to have been stripped out of their holes.

“The damage did not appear to have been caused by the dogs, and there did not appear to be any tooth or claw marks in the wood,” the report stated.

The victim told officers the man was black with a partially gray mustache, and that he was wearing a tan jacket, khaki pants and a baseball hat. He said he didn’t want to press charges but wanted officers to be aware in case similar events take place again.
