A wildfire in Aiken County Friday claimed the life of a Windsor man.
The victim has been preliminarily identified as 72-year-old Howard S. Simmons of Charlie's Loop, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
According to witnesses at the scene, a wildfire was observed by Simmons, and he then went into his mobile home, Carlton said.
The fire eventually spread to Simmons' mobile home at about 1:30 p.m. and Simmons' sister, who observed the mobile home on fire, called 911 at around 1:45 p.m., Carlton said.
When firefighters from the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene, the mobile home was fully consumed, Carlton said, and Simmons' body was discovered after the fire was controlled.
The Coroner's Office pronounced Simmons dead at 3:36 p.m. Friday.
An autopsy is scheduled today in Newberry, and positive ID will be accomplished through DNA testing, Carlton said.
The origin of the fire currently is under investigation by arson investigators.
