Whether it’s as a player or as an official, Eddy Martinez’s disciplined approach has enabled him to reach the upper levels of the sport of polo. The horseman’s commitment to excellence was recognized as Martinez was selected by the United States Polo Association as the 2011 Umpire of the Year.

“This is one of the most meaningful things that has happened to me during my polo career,” said Martinez.

And for the past 15 years, Martinez has dedicated himself toward becoming the best USPA official that he can be, and through hard work, effort and staying up to date on the sport’s rules, he has been able to excel on the field as both a player and as an official.

“I’ve spent a lot of hours reading, going to meetings and working,” said Martinez. “I couldn’t be happier than to be presented with such an honor.”

The hours spent working toward improving his skills as an official is something that Martinez takes great pride in. The athlete and official who has so much passion for polo and is thankful for what he has achieved in the sport, is thrilled to be able to give something back to the game.

Martinez enjoys his role as an official, but takes his responsibilities very serioulsy.

“When you accept the challenge of being an umpire, when you’re wearing the stripes, you’re in control, and the players on the field have to respect that,” said Martinez. “You have to concentrate on your job.”
