An Aiken man was detained on drug charges after an off-duty agent with the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division chased him through the parking lot of Walmart, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

Cedric O’Neal Ross, 34, of Barnwell Avenue, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of cocaine, and placed in the Aiken County detention center, according to a report.

The SLED agent told officers he was in the area of Walmart on Richland Avenue on Thursday when he was “overwhelmed” by the smell of what he believed to be marijuana.

He also received numerous walk-up complaints from individuals who pointed out two subjects that were believed to be the origin of the scent, according to the report.

The agent approached the men and confirmed the smell was coming from them, according to the report. One of the men consented to a search, and while the agent was searching him, Ross reportedly fled the Walmart parking lot toward Ferrando’s.

The SLED agent chased and apprehended Ross, according to the report.

While officers were searching the area, they found a “large bag” of a green plant-like material believed to be marijuana underneath an SUV in the parking lot about 25 feet from where Ross was arrested, according to the report. Next to that bag was another bag of “white powder substance” believed to be cocaine.

Ross told officers on the scene that the items found were his, according to the report.
