Local kids kept warm in the chilly weather Saturday morning by taking a run around the track.
The City of Aiken's Fifth Annual Kids' Marathon concluded with the Fun Run where local children completed 26.2 miles of walking, jogging or running with a 1.2 mile race around the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center track.
This year, 85 children enrolled and 64 participated in the Fun Run.
“We're so pleased with the outcome and the numbers,” said City Recreation Program Supervisor Jessica Campbell.
The running program consists of kids running at home and school as they record their progress over a few weeks time before hitting the asphalt at Odell Weeks to complete their 26.2 mile goal.
The Fun Run is an exciting event for the kids who get to participate in a friendly competition but all get medals for completing. They're cheered on by family and other peers, and get the satisfaction of crossing the finish line.
Campbell said it's a wonderful opportunity to teach kids from kindergarten through fifth grade the importance of physical fitness.
“The City definitely has a focus on promoting health and wellness in the community,” Campbell said. “We will definitely continue to offer programs such as this to support that initiative.”
St. Mary's and Mead Hall had an active group of runners at the event, and Campbell said she hopes to see more schools get involved in the future.
Sponsors included Moe's Southwest Grill, At Home Personal Training, Aiken Running Club, Fleet Feet Sports and Eat Smart Move More Aiken County.
