Since the occurrence of my stroke nearly a month ago, I have been remarkably fortunate in many ways. Beginning at the end of last week, I am taking only speech therapy at Hitchcock Healthcare here in Aiken – thanks to a wonderful staff member, Marcia Harris.
My primary goal at some point is to return to the Aiken Standard and resume my reporting career.
I also received kind support at Aiken Regional Medical Centers and more recently at the Walton Rehabilitation Health System in Augusta. I remain emotional for the best of reasons for those who visited me in those facilities and through the astounding number of cards I’ve received – at least as many as 150 and probably far more.
I cannot begin to fully express my gratitude for those who have been so wonderful to me – including so many children who sent cards to that old guy who visits their schools.
I wish I had room to list all the people who have supported me; however, I only can cite six more of them. It still amazes me that S.C. Rep. Bill Taylor, R-Aiken, and his wife Donna welcomed me into their home for four days last week.
There is no way I can even comprehend their generosity.
Currently, I am staying with our executive editor, Tim O’Briant, and his wife Sharyn and their sons. Tim is far beyond an employer. We have been friends for nearly 30 years, and I was a member of the wedding party for Tim and Sharyn in 1995.
Let me just say that Tim is the guy – and always has been.
People may happen to see me around town these days, but it will be a while before I can go to events such as my own Sunrise Aiken Rotary Club and the Aiken Noon Rotary Club.
I also truly miss all the school kids and teenagers and their teachers. I look forward to seeing them again.
I can be reached by my email address at email@example.com.
Thank you so much.
